It was strange. Inara *had* been thinking along those lines. A Companion was the perfect cover for an assasin.

"No." She told Inara quickly. "It had nothing to do with Jayne. Him bein' on board was just their sick way of testing me, and according to them I failed." Luscinia said, sighing. "Look, Inara, I came aboard this ship for the Tams." Best to just say it, right? No dancing around with another Companion who could read her easily if she tried to lie. "My mission was to come aboard and kill them both quickly. Take out the rest of the crew--especially Captain Reynolds--if I had time left over." She paused, waiting for Inara's reaction.

INara could not fathom aworld without the Tams. River had grown to be such a factor in Inara's life. Again, another reason why she had decided to stay a bit longer and not tell the crew she was leaving. She just couldn't do it right now.

Luscinia scoffed quietly. "Wouldn't matter. I could run to the end of the verse and they'd find me." There was a sad fear in her voice.

"Simon and River have been running a good deal and have yet to be apprehended. There is still hope," Inara said, ever the optomist.
After a short pause, Inara continued. "I seem to recall rumors of a few women leaving the Guild for one reason or another, and I vaguely remember talk of the Alliance interfereing with a young up and coming companion..." Inara said thoughtfully, trying to remember more detail.

"I never wanted to be a Companion." Luscinia commented. "My father shipped me off. So, when they offered me a job, something besides being a Companion, I was happy, excited even. Wasn't until later that I learned what they really wanted me for."

Inara smiled. "I love being a Companion," and she did. The only time she cursed her job was when Mal was around. She wanted to belong only to Mal, but Inara knew no other way of life then that of a Companion. It was in her blood.
