Apologies and a Decent Conversation (tag Simon) « Thread Started on Jul 11, 2006, 1:46am »
Kaylee groaned in her sleep. Her dream wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't unpleasant, it just was. It was unlike anything she had dreamed of before, normally her dreams were either filled with Serenity, Simon, or something of equal niceness. Sometimes she dreamt of her future child, but this time her dreams left her confused for she couldn't recall more than a gray cloud of mist. That had been her dream: her standing in the mist with no purpose.
Her eyes fluttered open with some effort as they were crusted over. She rubbed at them tiredly, getting rid of it, and scrubbing her face viciously to erase any reminder of her tears. They had company coming tonight and it wouldn't do for her to look more grimy and worn down than normal.
She stretched and as she did her hand brushed against a piece of paper. Kaylee took it delicately in her hands and just stared at it. She knew a letter when she saw one, but who would see fit to sending her one now? Her mind instantly supplied a list of names, but she brushed it off. It wasn't a short letter by any means as it went onto the backside of the paper. She recognized the tidy scrawl and could feel something inside of her break. Did she want to read it now?
Yes, she realized, she really rather did.
Carefully, she unfolded it and sat up so she could read it easier.
Tears began falling after reading the second paragraph. She didn't know whether to believe him or not. But he sounded so sincere and since when was Simon ever really capable of lying? She continued to read through the letter, heavy tears falling onto the sheet of paper smearing the ink. He really honest to God felt this way and it tore her apart to think he still did even after she went all crazy on him.
She folded the letter carefully and put it into her pocket and stood. She needed to find him, and if she knew him at all, he would be exactly where he always was in a time of internal crisis.

Simon was on the infirmary floor, his upper body hidden by the door of the cabinet which he was scrubbing down. He just needed to organize, to clean and tidy, to do things that he knew would never let him down. Since he was afraid going to talk to Kaylee would end in more of his insipid words and heartache on her part. No, he would leave her be. She had his letter and he was sure she could find him if she so chose.
He continued absent mindedly scrubbing at a spot that was beginning to wear from his insistence, staring blankly at the floor. This time he'd really done it. If Kaylee couldn't love him even when he was telling her how much he loved her, maybe she could never love him. Maybe writing that letter had been a bad idea, had only made things worse. At least there was honesty to it. At least now Kaylee would know how he sincerely felt. She could do with that truth and knowledge what she chose.
Simon sat back on his haunches and tossed the cloth aside. Standing slowly he began to replace everything he'd removed from the cabinet in an easily accessible order. As long as Kaylee was happy, Simon would be happy, regardless of whether the decision she made, to love him or not, broke his heart.

Kaylee hovered just outside the med bay with a nervous and pensive expression. She could clearly see Simon from where she was and what she saw made her believe that he was truly miserable. The vindictive side that she didn't even know she had was cackling gleefully, while the rest of her was falling apart.
She had done this. Unintentionally of course and she really wasn't sure if what she had heard had been real or not. But, she couldn't get herself to move just yet. She wasn't sure what she would say. What she could say.
Biting her lower lip till she tasted blood she finally made up her mind. Lifting her hand to the metal doorframe, Kaylee rapped gently three times, just enough to alert him to her presence.

Simon continued about his tidying up. A few of the vials in one of the cabinets were tossed about from the last time he'd had a patient and had needed things quickly, so he made sure to put things back in their order. There wasn't really anything that needed to be done, but still, to keep his mind occupied, Simon found things to do. Even if it was just rubbing at the same spot on the counter with a cloth over and over, it was something. It was better than thinking.
He sighed lightly and jumped when he heard a knock on the metal of the door. Spinning around, Simon was met with the sight of Kaylee there. His heart skipped for a moment and he hoped that she wasn't there to tell him off. He didn't know if he could face that. Not so soon after spilling his heart and soul to her in that letter.
Gesturing into the room, Simon motioned Kaylee in to make herself comfortable wherever. He ran a hand through his hair and took a cleansing breath before speaking.
"Kaylee,"' he said lightly. "Is everything alright?"
He knew it was in a sense, but in another sense it wasn't. He just hoped that by the end of their talk they could make things right.

Simon was confused for a moment. He watched Kaylee and noticed that she was clutching something, the letter he'd written, in her hand. His breath caught in his throat and he nodded.

Kaylee's face split into a huge watery smile. "Absolutely?" she quiered. Because if he had then she owed him a huge apology and she had no idea of what would be good enough. She wasn't good with words, never really had been, sure she could talk all right but when it came to writing things it didn't seem to always go right.
This really bothered her quite a great deal. She wasn't good enough for him. She couldn't even figure out how to apologize properly.

"Every last word in that letter was meant the way it was written," Simon said softly.
He watched her as she seemed to think things over. He hoped that she accepted what he'd written as the truth, because that's what it was. He stepped closer to her slowly, looking at her, meeting her gaze. She looked so lost and he couldn't help but reach out to her, settling a hand gently on her shoulder and giving it a squeeze.
