Their voices faintly echoed behind him as he stepped slowly down the stairs and looked down into the med bay. Saffron lay sleeping on the treatment table. For the first time, he thought, she almost looked peaceful. He felt a pang of guilt for lying to Monty, but no good would've come out of telling him about her presence here. He leaned heavily against the doorway and sighed.

He was tired. She could feel it in the way he leaned against her cool metal. She wished she could do more for him with everything that’s been going on lately. It wasn’t like she had a voice, but when she spoke, she knew Mal could hear her. Mal, Wash, and Kaylee always heard her. All of them could, if they wanted to, but those three were the only ones that had made an effort to listen.

She didn’t like Saffron. She never had, from the moment the little she-devil had stepped on the ship from the beginning. She had played Mal too many times. If Serenity had her way, the little woman would be thrown out of the airlock and who cared what happened to her. Still, she knew Mal wanted to do the right thing. Probably the best way to describe it would be that Serenity was jealous. Mal was hers first.

Around Mal, the lights flickered, dimming a few times, before being bright once more. Further away, her engine hummed, whirring a little harder than probably necessary. She was trying to talk to Mal, knowing he’d hear her.

He had started to close his eyes in thought, when he felt a slight vibration run through the ship. It made him feel restless, eager to get off this rock and to get this woman off his boat. Too much trouble here and not enough work. He stepped into the med bay and leaned against one of the counters, still looking at Saffron. What was it about her that intrigued him so much? Was it just the enigma that she represented or was it that deep down there was someone crying out for help, but was afraid to trust anyone.

If Serenity could shake her head, she would have. Not that she actually had a head to shake. The woman wasn't nothing but trouble. Yet, for some reason, he had a sore spot for her. He had no trouble believing in her or wanting to help her. She may have looked innocent while she was asleep, but she was far from innocent at all. If she could hug Mal, she would have. Sooner or later, he would have to get her off the ship. Serenity hoped for sooner.

::She rolled over restlessly, in her drugged up comatose state she could feel a presence. Always the ever watchful, ever the survivalist. She began trying to fight the meds::

"Easy there." He said quietly. "Don't hurt yourself." He didn’t want to sound concerned, but it was obvious in his voice. I need an extra leg to kick myself with, he thought
